The RYA Sea Survival Course is a two-day training program that covers a wide range of topics related to safety at sea. The course is designed to help sailors prepare for emergencies that may occur while at sea, including man overboard situations, fire, flooding, and abandon ship procedures.

This one day sea survival course prepares you to stay alive in an emergency. It will show you how to make the best use of a life raft and you will learn some basic sea survival techniques.

Course Content
Theory, adult course.
This one day sea survival course is designed for leisure and charter boat users. This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence. To commercially endorse these certificates you will also need to attend a VHF Radio Course and a RYA First aid course and obtain a signed ML5 Medical form.
The course covers a wide range of topics, including preparation for sea survival, lifejackets, search and rescue, and includes a two-hour session in a swimming pool with a life raft. By the end of the course, you will have gained valuable knowledge and experience in sea survival techniques and the safety equipment carried on small boats.
The course also provides ample opportunity for practical drills in a life raft. You will learn how to properly use the equipment and take part in simulated emergency situations. This hands-on experience will give you the confidence and skills needed to handle an emergency situation while on the water.
Ability After Course
You will have a good knowledge of sea survival techniques, the safety equipment carried on small boats and will have spent valuable time doing practical drills in a life raft.

The Sea Survival Course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to survive at sea. From preparation to rescue, the course covers all the critical aspects of sea survival. By the end of the course, you’ll be better equipped to face any emergencies that may arise while at sea.
Preparation for Sea Survival
You will learn about the different survival difficulties and requirements that you may face while at sea. We will also ensure you become familiar with the equipment that’s available to you and the actions that you must take before abandoning ship.
Lifejackets and Liferafts
You will learn about lifejacket design and their construction, correct donning procedures, and the purpose and use of lifejackets. You will also learn about safety harnesses, their purpose, and how to use them. Additionally, you’ll be taught about different types of liferafts, their designs and constructions, and how to stow and contain them onboard. The course also covers launching and abandoning the vessel and boarding a liferaft. You’ll learn how to right a capsized liferaft and the initial actions that must be taken in a liferaft.
Principles of Survival
The courses teaches the methods to increase your chances of survival. You’ll learn about the signs, symptoms, and treatment of hypothermia, sunburn, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Additionally, you’ll be taught about survival routines that can aid in your location. You’ll also learn about the correct use of pyrotechnics and other location aids, water rationing procedures and dehydration preventative measures, as well as sources of food and food rationing.
Survival Craft Ailments
Survival craft ailments are issues that could arise while at sea, such as preventing seasickness, recognising the symptoms of hypothermia and preventative measures and preventing fires by maintaining their boat’s electrical system.
Raft Management
Raft management is a crucial aspect of sea survival. Learn how to manage your liferaft and ensure that it remains functional.
Search and Rescue
In the event of an emergency, search and rescue operations are crucial. Learn about rescue by helicopter or vessel, the role of HM Coastguard, UK and International SAR Organisation, and other services that may come to your aid.
