The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Intermediate Powerboat Training is a course designed to help individuals improve their powerboating skills and knowledge. The course is suitable for those who have some experience in powerboating and wish to enhance their skills and confidence.

Syllabus
The RYA Intermediate Powerboat course is typically conducted over two days and involves both practical and theoretical training. The course is delivered by an RYA-approved training center and is taught by experienced RYA Powerboat instructors.
During the classroom portion of the course, participants will learn about the principles of navigation, including chart work, tidal streams, and electronic navigation. They will also learn about pilotage, including how to plan and execute a safe passage.
On the water, participants will practice boat handling skills, such as close-quarters maneuvering, high-speed handling, and man-overboard drills. They will also learn about safety procedures, including how to use safety equipment and respond to emergencies.
- Preparation for sea: This module covers the pre-launch checks and procedures required before setting off on a voyage. This includes checking the fuel and oil levels, ensuring the safety equipment is on board, and checking the weather forecast.
- Boat handling: This module covers advanced boat handling techniques, including steering and handling in confined spaces, high-speed handling, and man overboard recovery techniques.
- Passage planning and pilotage: This module covers planning and executing coastal passages, including navigation, chart work, and pilotage techniques. It also covers how to deal with hazards and unexpected situations, such as shallow water or obstructions.
- Meteorology: This module covers how to interpret weather forecasts and how to plan voyages based on the weather conditions.
- Rules of the road: This module covers the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and how to apply them in practice.
- Night cruising: This module covers the skills and techniques required for navigating a powerboat at night, including the use of navigation lights, electronic navigation aids, and radar.
- Emergency situations: This module covers how to deal with emergencies at sea, including towing, dealing with a disabled vessel, and rescuing a person in the water.
- Communications: This module covers how to use VHF radio communications, including emergency procedures and calling for assistance.
